@ShadowWizzard wow! Things ping reached to my Email Inbox and hence it notified me that the life still exist here :)
How are you?
What is going on?
It's blessful/blissful to find that the first/ancient user @JeffAtwood is also pingable in this century! :)

meta.stackexchange.com/q/233692/997587 if it's a long-lived room, could you not just use meta for this?
ugh
I swear there's some lore behind this
@starball I think this was an attempt to solve the "I'll just drop my question into chat after 10 seconds and demand attention" + the nuance of "Don't ask questions here, talk about problems" rule on root access
06:27
meta.stackexchange.com/q/111493/997587 I can't repro this. now what?
@starball I mean, technically you don't need to
That said, if you can test and show it works, post an answer saying it works, VTC appropriately
"Some random dog" >_>
user152859
07:26
Finally back to office after over a week! :D
lol
probably the only person in history to be happy about that
user152859
@JourneymanGeek the "can't reproduce" closure should be used only when it's result of a change in the system, if just can't reproduce without any changes, it should get the tag, i.e. should flag asking to add this tag. No?
@ShadowWizzard one would assume the system was changed at some point + a closure wouldn't need mod/CM attention
user152859
@JourneymanGeek you mean like kids happy to go to school? Yes, I was such a kid as well. :D
wierdo :D
user152859
07:29
That is me. :P
user152859
@JourneymanGeek ah, only now I actually saw the bug and yes, in this specific case there were changes related to ssl, so the closure is totally justified. Kaboom! :D
@ShadowWizzard the bug was clearly mentioned here + the question was linked :D
user152859
07:58
@JourneymanGeek well I was just replying to the latest message. :D
user152859
oh my there are more pingz!
user152859
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot yay!
user152859
@Pandya we're all alive and kicking here, yeah. :-D
@ShadowWizzard XD, yes, but I based it off full context here.
user152859
@Pandya well, Jeff has agenda by coming here i.e. not just to mingle with us, but it's totally fair. ;)
08:01
lol
user152859
@JourneymanGeek true true, not your fault.... this time. :D
@ShadowWizzard I mean, he's talking no? And one might find parallels in trying to make the place you call your home better, in the face of adversity :D
user152859
@Pandya I'm fine, in the final stage of recovery from a small surgery I went through a week ago. :)
user152859
@JourneymanGeek of course, but he talk about one subject and don't think he'll reply if we'll start asking him about other things.
@ShadowWizzard lets see after the talk
Jeff was mentioned in the AMAs, and might have had some input on some of the recent promises
08:49
@Tinkeringbell I have the best handwriting in class. Or used to. It's just handwriting is extra effort with no gain, and profs don't read what we write anyway
@ShadowWizzard The markdown is somewhat weird though (not-LaTeX math)
user152859
@cocomac yeah, something is off, but... red flag based on that only?
user152859
@M.A.R. send me, I promise to read it. ;)
@ShadowWizzard no
@ShadowWizzard Oh, no, I wouldn't red flag for that. I just thought it was interesting. It might still not be a legitimate answer, but it's not like we can red flag every time someone uses bad formatting...
08:56
@ShadowWizzard sometimes they copy posts and edit later
scratch that
smells like chatgpt
@cocomac looks like they copied LaTeX render. So probably plagiarized
@JourneymanGeek ...___...
user152859
@M.A.R. :-(
user152859
@cocomac well, in case of known troll we can, but this something different.
09:11
I modflagged that answer pointing out their history and the possibility this was AI generated.
user152859
Yeah probably the best way.

Can there also be extra lung, I wonder?
09:28
With enough mad science, everything is possible!
@M.A.R. Well, that was that whole 90s scare :D
@VLAZ I misread that as "mod science" and spent a moment thinking Wait, what does a diamond mod testing stuff have anything to do with that? Anyways, I'm heading off SE for now; I'll be back tomorrow
@cocomac I mean, mods do also have the power. And there is no requirement they aren't mad.
@cocomac We science things all the time
There's even a Mad Scientist mod ;-)
user152859
09:58
@cocomac have fun!
11:01
@ShadowWizzard probably the only organ whose extra would be a real improvement. Though of course you'd have to fit it in there somehow
So I can find it later (and I'm looking for something else)

Q: How can I help promote Ask Different as a new version of OS X is released?

Joel SpolskyThis time, the latest and greatest is Lion, but this has all happened before, and it will all happen again. There will be zillions of mac users upgrading, and they'll have lots of questions. And since all those questions will be new, Ask Different will have as good a shot at having the best answe...

feels like an example Joel engaged on the network :D
I DO NOT REMEMBER WHERE IT GOES, but I feel like it has something to do with @ShadowWizzard, so I'll just stuff some keywords in, drop the link and try to remember/find the appropriate comment later
11:25
@JourneymanGeek if you're condescending enough they wouldn't notice you have no idea what you're talking about
Wait, I'm expected to have an idea what I'm talking about?
Either I'm right and @ShadowWizzard knows what I'm talking about, or I'm not and I'll go check my recent comments and work out what I was
BUT my mind is mostly on the chat improvements posts and I'm trying to find an example of when we workshopped something on root access
@JourneymanGeek wait, what year is it
How should I know?
PANIC
I'm constantly travelling forwards in time
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot Probably due to daylight savings but it's 2027 here.
@VLAZ 2027? If this has something to do with that memory erasure appointment I had, I'd rather not know.
Chat's bugging out, just got a sound notification for a message that I never received.
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot Forget about it
Chat's also been jumping into refresh loops all the time since moving to the skies.
Which timeline is this?
Has no one killed baby Hitler in this timeline?
Whoops, gave too much away
11:36
@M.A.R. The one with the hamster terminators (yet to come)
@JourneymanGeek wow you're so cool mister
@VLAZ what do you do with your savings?
Invest them into a vast portfolio. Then lose them.
...
I confused @ShadowWizzard with @V2Blast
A common mistake
@VLAZ Seriously, I lost a good chunk over the last weeks.
11:41
If you don't wanna lose daylight don't live on the bloody North pole santa
Wow, I lost 10% of all my savings in 2 weeks. Thanks, Donald Trump! I love you!
user152859
@M.A.R. extra brain won't hurt as well.
user152859
@JourneymanGeek and?
@ShadowWizzard oh, I thought YOU had commented about it and you haden't.
:D
user152859
@JourneymanGeek ah, I claimed he didn't once? Perhaps, and even if I'm wrong, since then our current CEO became more active, somehow so it's fine.
11:44
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot as if you need even more reasons to love the orange saint (sorry BTW)
Though in the meanwhile I need someone to feel sorry for me.
user152859
@M.A.R. you know his secret to become orange?
Our economy has been crappy for so long I don't notice anything out of the ordinary, no matter how many ultimatums the likes of him give
@M.A.R. Your economy is economy sized?
@ShadowWizzard he eats lots of carrots
user152859
@JourneymanGeek typical, we both do blasts. Of sorts.
11:45
@M.A.R. What should I be sorry for?
user152859
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot from 10000000 to just 9000000? Oh no.
If you're already in 2027, I should be happy you're done with most of it.
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot Since when is fictional stock market values called 'savings'?
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot I'm expressing sorrow at your loss of savings to be polite. Don't make it any harder than it needs to be.
savings go in a savings account, not the stock market :P
user152859
11:47
@Tinkeringbell no, they go under the floor. Or the bed, as cash. ;)
@Tinkeringbell no no, see they save daylight
the fools
@M.A.R. But you said I should be sorry for you!
@ShadowWizzard They go in an old sock if you're Dutch ;-)
@Tinkeringbell That's a nice way to lose money. Money loses value over time.
user152859
@Tinkeringbell yes, that can fit, only if the sock is big enough. And clean enough. :D
11:48
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot well yeah do that too. I'm very pitiable. Right there mmmmmm
@ShadowWizzard thigh-high stockings ;-)
@Tinkeringbell I tried to open a stock market account yesterday and got blocked. Thanks for the reminder that I have to call the bank at some point
@M.A.R. A little on the side.
user152859
@M.A.R. but he's using The Stick much more than The Carrot, so he should be more brown-ish.
@M.A.R. Thank you. It warms.
11:48
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot Stock markets do too. And I can't be arsed to go sponsor a stock market company anyways.
user152859
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot like an oven?
@Tinkeringbell I know you're being Dutch and all but over a long enough period of time they never do
user152859
@Mithical with "error: can't open stock market account with negative balance"? ;)
I liked the principle of stocks when they first invented them (everyone buy a share of building this boat and if it returns, get an equal share of profits. If it doesn't, we spread the loss). I find current day stock markets and the people earning money from them bad for humanity as a whole.
@ShadowWizzard no :p
user152859
11:50
good!
@Mithical aren't you a student? Any proper student is in debt.
You have been slacking off
user152859
I started one only after getting married, didn't bother before.
Do be fair, I have funds, not stocks, which are generally "safe" (exceptions with orange manalishis).
@ShadowWizzard after marriage, it sounded like an easier commitment?
user152859
@M.A.R. or even... earning money! gasp
user152859
11:51
@Tinkeringbell sounds like fun!
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot what's a manalishi? Sounds delicious
@ShadowWizzard They can hold a lot of cash ;-) Get a 'plus-size' :P
user152859
@Tinkeringbell sock++

@Tinkeringbell is this one of those incremental games where you have to buy multiple pouches to raise the money cap?
11:53
@ꓢPArcheon Yep! If you grow out of thigh-highs, you can start filling a mattress :P
user152859
@M.A.R. no, it was the first time the bank itself offered to start investing in stocks and appointed advisor for that, so we agreed. Was too lazy to try by myself before that. :D
Or you know, give micro-credits where the only terms and conditions are 'pay it forward once you're able'

@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot still nice, if in USD ;)

IMO the whole "share" thing should get a total and utter redesign, e.g. sharing via Twitter/X isn't relevant anymore: "You’ll need to log in before you can share that post."
user152859
I doubt anyone intend to create account just to be able to share SE post.
user152859
And personally I just want to see the whole X thing nuked, but meh. :D
X marks the spot to burn in radiation
@ShadowWizzard I think the problem there is... what microblog?
Most of the tech crowd is on the tooters mastodon, most of the other interesting people are on the skeeters bluesky
there will be some joker demanding lies.social support
14:41
@JourneymanGeek I've seen exactly one screenshot of it and the button to "re-truth" will be forever burned into my memory.
user152859
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot exactly!
user152859
@JourneymanGeek won't say "most" unless you have numbers? (well, I'm in neither of those. ;))
user152859
@JourneymanGeek Trump's?
@ShadowWizzard Its based off the PNOMA survey
(pulled numbers out my ar...)
Ew, I don't wanna touch those numbers.
14:46
@VLAZ "You can re-lie on lies!"
@JourneymanGeek You convinced me! I'll use your new social network.
Reminds me of somebody running for a student president in Uni. Their name was "Wright" and the slogan was "You can't go wrong with Wright"
(or something along those lines)
There is only one person who is Wright.
What if the other candidate is wong?
then you can tell wright from wong.
user152859
@JourneymanGeek surely more accurate than most surveys. :-D
@JourneymanGeek Cyno Mains is that way, thanks.
user152859
15:00
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot you don't have to touch, only watch them evolve.
More seriously though, its a tricky set of choices to make
15:18
It's not that hard. Just pick one that you think is easy to use and has fun content ;-)
@MetaAnnouncements thinking about renaming my mse account to A-feature-request

@MetaAnnouncements I ask for new world leaders.
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot I ask the Illuminaty step in and take the reigns.

@Mithical you should really change your rotation. You want to apply Cryo after Hydro to trigger Frozen before your normal attack chain.
@ꓢPArcheon I'm endgame enough that my at-wills are enough without any need for status-effects
@Slate Same way I developed my understanding of Donald Trump. Lots of experience. Some was fun, most was painful.
@Slate performing rituals of sacrificing post signatures under the full moon in exchange for the occult knowledge
17:31
@Mithical Did you suffer over the sacrifices made? Have you reaped insufficient benefits for your tithing at the altar of knowledge? Has this mortal coil wound itself around you in response to your supplications? If so, you may be entitled to financial compensation.
Questionary compensation.
@A-Tech I think everyone should have a place to go on the Internet that they enjoy, as long as what they enjoy is not hurting other people or groups of people.
cc @Mithical 👆
> Stack Overflow was always intended to be a democracy. With the Stack Exchange Q&A network, we've come a long way towards that goal:
Hey, that reminds me...
Didn't somebody say the "Community Asks Sprint" are reminiscent of that Russian TV program where Vladimir Putin descends from his throne to speak to the people?
17:47
@Mithical *accepts bonking but gestures wildly at how the answer appeared prior to my edit*
user152859
@JeffAtwood but what if it does hurt others? Do they deserve shadow banning? (that was the question, I think.)
@Spevacus at least the text was unique!
:p
I'm about to unique your text six ways from Sunday
good, you're learning
18:09
@JeffAtwood Oh, Jeff hangs out here? :D Hi Jeff, I don't know you, but I'm one of those trying to keep your legacy alive. (I'm a UX Researcher at SO, here to bug everyone about the future of Chat)
I have a question for the group! I’m curious which scripts are most widely used and if there are any gaps in this list: stackapps.com/questions/tagged/chat+script Knowing what people rely on could help inform potential improvements and also will make sure the team doesn't break what's most important.
3
To be more clear on the ask: If there is a script that you depend on for Chat, and it's not in the list, is it possible to have them added?
I think I listed some of them in my answer to your question
@Mithical Perfect! Yes, I did see you added some in your answer. Are all the ones you rely on most in this list? stackapps.com/questions/tagged/chat+script I can definitely double check, but trying to get a sense for how complete or incomplete that list is in general. If there are any important scripts not listed. I know @cocomac also mentioned concerns about changed in Chat breaking scripts.
@EmmaBee I don't think the Charcoal ones are there
most should be at charcoal-se.org/scripts though
18:16
@EmmaBee I don't really use any for non-mod stuff. For mod stuff, I use chat redact messages to fix the inability for moderators to redact stuff that isn't edited. Create private chatroom, but I never use it. Lastly, and critically, show deleted messages in chat.
@Mithical Oh I see, so there are a few lists. Thanks for sharing! Any others that folks are aware of?
Yeah, most of the mod scripts aren't on StackApps
@Mithical Ah, makes sense! Are they all on that Charcoal list? Or is there a mod only list somewhere?
@Spevacus Thank you! Noting these.
Charcoal uses a bunch that help it interface with SmokeDetector reports. By far the most used is FIRE, which adds a fire emoji next to Smokey's spam reports that allows you to open the report and issue feedback on whether it's spam or not. It also lets you flag from the dialog that pops up. It's an incredibly useful script.
uuuhhhh the list of mod userscripts I have bookmarked has been deprecated since 2018 but I know there's a more up-to-date one out there
ah yeah here we go
18:20
@Mithical Perfect!
@Spevacus n00b question, but is Charcoal used primarily for spam managing, or does it serve multiple purposes?
@EmmaBee There are a few scripts that are not active in chat, but will create chat messages/actions from public Q&A. One of the ones that the SO curators use a lot is the *-pls request generator, which is shorthand for a "Please help me close/delete/flag this post" request. It will create a chat message based on what you input and toss it into the SOCVR room.
Some of the scripts I have are custom-written or just for fun (or both), so won't appear on any of those lists (like the script I have for making Room Owners rainbow-colored)
@EmmaBee Charcoal is the organization behind the SmokeDetector bot and mainly deals with spam, yes.
Spam, abusive content (including rude content or plain gibberish), and occasionally bad actors, but in a nutshell yes.
Got it. And then there are other chat rooms that are to coordinate curation and review queues. Do those rooms also have very specific and important scripts?
18:26
@EmmaBee The big rooms with userscripts I know of are Charcoal HQ (a.k.a. CHQ), SOBotics, and SOCVR. Oh, and stackapps has a room.
@cocomac Is the majority of moderation, curation and spam prevention work happening just for Stack Overflow? Or are there similar smaller versions of these rooms across the SE network?
i think maybe this conversation is highlighting a search problem 😎
SO suffers from its scale, so chatrooms to coordinate curation arose from a need for that to work somewhat efficiently. SOCVR and SOBotics facilitate that purpose and are focused on SO. But Charcoal HQ is a network-wide effort to prevent spam.
@EmmaBee CHQ is network-wide. There is a network-wide equivalent to SOBotics that isn't nearly as active and only operates across a few sites. I don't think there's any equivalent to SOCVR that relies on scripts to the same degree.
@EmmaBee I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Other sites also have moderation-oriented rooms, such as Raiders of the Lost Downboat for Ask Ubuntu. For "majority", metasmoke has some graphs here you can look at. E.g., for all-time metasmoke reports by site, SO is the largest, but for the past month, it's Super User.
Thanks all! I have to dip out for a meeting, but if anyone else joins the room and wants to add their two cents I'll be back to read through the comments (and maybe see if I can figure out how to bookmark a conversation thread ;) )
user152859
18:32
@cocomac there's also a room on Super User that @Journeyman mentions often, where users report spam.
user152859
(though it's not related to the bots)
user152859
ah, yeah. :)
looks at @ShadowWizzard
user152859
@EmmaBee problem with chat conversation is that we can't exclude messages out of it, only choose first and last. So in active chat like this one, you'll get lots of noise when you bookmark. This can be amended though, by implementing this ancient feature request. ;-) /cc @balpha

What about the code? Don't know, you didn't really ask any question. String is totally fine, StringBuilder should be used only when you append to the string in a loop or something like that.

19:40
@ShadowWizzard Ha! Nice! I was also very impressed seeing Prashanth in the comments recently, and I have to say seeing one person (employee wise) starting to engage, does help get over the mental hump of participating.
Personally, my hesitation to participate came from not feeling like I am "not really a user" or a true member of the community. I didn't really know anything about SO/SE before joining the company, so it didn't seem my place to interject myself among people who are here running the site and making the magic happen.
Oops, came from feeling like*
People get upset when SE staff don't participate on the main sites, meta sites and chat.
@ShadowWizzard Ah thanks for explaining the bookmark feature. I'd ideally like to click a few chats and create a "collection" that I could refer back to, but I don't think that exists in any chat platform, so I am definitely getting ahead of myself with expectations. Still, need to discover this bookmarking feature in here....
@Mithical I mean, that was coordinated through Discord. It's not like we only talk to each other in SE chat
@AndreascondemnsIsraelalot I hear you, and I know people (like me) might hesitate if its not clear where and how to engage, what do folks want to chat about etc. For me it might be a little easier, since I am a researcher and have questions.

@Laurel well yeah but it was sparked through SE chat and the RPG group
@EmmaBee Anything. See it from the community's perspective. SE used to be run on democratic principles, but it's become this split between the community and the company, a company that's far too opaque and lacking in transparency, in many people's eyes a pure dictatorship. So any interaction. You're not coming to this place like a new user on the outside, you're coming from the inside, even if you're unfamiliar with it.
@ShadowWizzard Nope, that's the fastest way I can think of. I would suggest a binary search, that way you can find it in O(log n) 😁

@EmmaBee that's true, and glad you started to engage. :)

@EmmaBee yeah, what we do have is basic but still super useful. Like the chat itself, overall.

@balpha that's exactly what I do! :D
