comment Short story about a man trapped in a tunnel system by a predator he can't kill
My vague memory from reading the novel about 4 decades ago is that artur was deliberately trapped or marooned by some competitors or criminals and I don't have mental imagery of there being multiple levels just the image of him being marooned and this beast being a hindrance to him escaping from the planet or moon he was marooned on. Btw thanks for adding these details my memory is no longer as reliable as I would like!

The only improvement I can suggest for this very pleasantly surprising answer for which (and question editing) i want to thank you (but SO frowns upon that somehow), would be: can you find a public domain audio version of the book ? PS merci

comment Good on-screen ruler application for Windows?
if you just need a lightweight semi transparent horizontal line to help guide your reading detailed pdfs, this looks good., and doesn't need me to install some whopper NET framework just to let a 2mb app run like others have done..

comment 7zip produces different output from identical input
I use cryptsync for backups and recently had to restore from various backups when my main pc died. I suddenly discovered a huge number of false differences between backups from two pcs. The .7z files are different in size but the uncompressed contents are identical - I've opened an issue on the cryptsync github page to ask if it's possible to add custom commandline args to the compression/encryption stage that uses 7zip libraries linked into the cryptsync program.
