American Airlines Grounded All U.S. Flights on Christmas Eve Disrupting Holiday Travel Due to a 'Technical Issue'

A “technical issue” grounded all U.S. American Airlines (AA) flights this Christmas Eve.

The airline shared the newsvia X— formerly Twitter — posting, “We’re currently experiencing a technical issue with all American Airlines flights.”

They added that passenger safety was their “utmost priority” and once the situation was resolved they would have people on their way to their destinations. PerNBC News, the ground stop was lifted at 8 a.m. ET.

Ahead of the resolution, an AA spokesperson toldCNNthat they were working to “resolve the issue as quickly as possible.” They also apologized to customers for the inconvenience of disrupted holiday travel.

Per aFederal Aviation Administration (FAA) advisory notice, AA requested a ground stop for all its flights. CNN reported that the FAA directed all queries about the incident to the airline.

Another traveler lamented their spoilt holiday plans, posting, “What about connecting flights? I really don’t want our family vacation getting ruined because of this.”

“Thanks for messing w [with] family holidays,” another shared.

However many were grateful to the airline for taking passenger safety so seriously with one X user writing, “Thank you for taking safety above everything else.”

American Airlines did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for an update
