Jon's Java Jitter Joint

Please ping @JonEricson if you drop by. Office hours start 20 minutes after my first cup of coffee depending on availability. (The programming language named after a hot, caffeinated drink named after an Indonesian island is _always_ off-topic.)

An abbreviated timeline of the last year of my life: November 7, 2023: I was laid off. December 2, 2024: I wrote about my year of Jubilee. December 5, 2024: I got word that I'd been hired as Communities Manager for OpenSSL. For a view of my mental state after a year of scrapping for work, consider a dream I had the night after I got the news. In my dream, the offer was generous---at the top

Today is my last day as an employee of Stack Exchange, Inc. I’m extremely excited to be starting my new job as Community Product & Operations Manager of College Confidential. It’s a fantastic opportunity (and terrifying challenge) for me. Today, however, I’m going to talk about why I left what I long considered my dream job. Last summer I took a four-week sabbatical/roadtrip to visit fami

Hi @JonEricson. I just realized you're no longer a mod and we won't be seeing you in the TL, so I just wanted to drop by and tell you that you will be missed!

I care about the community I'm working with on the new job, but I'm very sympathetic to what it must be like to walk into a situation like SO/SE without a lot of experience in community management or this set of users. Easy to miss cultural queues and norms.

@Namaste It's a chat room I try to keep open in order to have a place to talk with folks who have something on their mind. (I'd even talk about Java if necessary.)

CMX recently released "The 2021 Community Industry Report" and I have thoughts. I'm gonna focus on this one chart that summarizes Community Management in 2021: I was one of the 503 people who answered "What are your top frustrations about managing your community and its activities?" The top 5 answers were: It's hard to quantify the value of the community (45%) It's dif

He didn't disrupt anything in Mos Eisley, and the people in Mos know it.

Perhaps it's nostalgia speaking, but I hope Stack Exchange finds another generation of fans. And I hope that projects like Codidact succeed as well. The Q&A format is wonderful and I don't see why one network should monopolize it. Trouble is, Stack Overflow doesn't see the value in sites that don't related to their (weird) emphasis on "technology". So I'm afraid the Stack Exchange experiment will fail. (Though it probably will be many years before the utter end. Maybe someone will wake up.)

We delegated so much authority to mods, which was, in a sense, a reward for the difficult and often unappreciated work they do. What happened last year was that the company took away some of that authority while also adding to the burden. It was a classic "more bricks, less straw" situation.

I got an email from a reader a few months ago. My reply got a little long and off-topic to what the reader had asked about. So I'm posting here and will email a copy to the reader too. The actual question is, I think, easy enough to guess and not terribly necessary to understand my response. Hello, Thank you for responding to my blog post. In many ways I write for myself and it's always a b

Ironically, his fear of being targeted and suspended by the CMs led to him being ... suspended by the CMs. If he hadn't expressed that fear, and instead concentrated on settling back into Mos, he might have been fine.

And the main issue Jon has raised here was Richard's sarcastic response to Ana, but that exchange was instigated by Ana, and yesterday, Ana said the thing she chided Richard for wasn't against the rules.

I don't think that's a constructive attitude either. But I think when someone feels like the people in charge are provoking him, the people in charge might do well to take a step back until he does something that is genuinely disruptive.

Mar 16, 2016 18:16
It feels like he's been railroaded, from an elected mod position to a suspension to a year-long chat ban.

Mar 16, 2016 18:13
The only ones who seem not to want to work with Richard, vis a vis the new culture in Mos, are the CMs.

Mar 16, 2016 18:11
@JonEricson It got better because we made a conscious effort to change it, not because Richard was gone. Give us some credit, please.

@amarillo Thanks for raising your concerns. Let me be the first to apologise: yes, that was an April fools' prank, partially something I instigated. None of us really expected it to go over as it did - the majority of rooms took it ok, but a larger number than we expected were unsettled by it. I hear favourable things about you from the scifi mods, so it would be a shame to lose a prolific chatter - you have my apologies, and we've taken all the feedback on board.
Mar 16, 2016 19:17
@JonEricson - Cheers. I'm having a think about my response. I'm a bit shell-shocked about the whole thing at the moment.
