Hi! Sorry for the delay, I didn't realize I needed to be subscribed to the mailing list to participate in conversations. My use case is that I have a gui application which runs arbitrary tasks as background threads, and needs to provide a cancel button to interrupt them. The tasks are often legacy code and/or are very difficult to find reasonable points to insert checks for interruption. Another use case would be implementing a python shell in a gui. If you want to maintain responsiveness while commands execute, they must be able to run in another thread (or another process, but this is not ideal if the shell is supposed to interact with the internals of your application). Interrupting lines with ctrl-c requires being able to send an exception to worker threads. Hope this helps! Thanks, - Audrey

PyPy Winter Sprint + cpyext

Hey everyone! Those of you who attended or followed one of the last two winter sprints in Leysin might know me, the others probably won't. I'm (still) a Master's student writing my thesis on PyPy's current issue with cross-heap cycles when using cpyext. The main point is, that they are not collected and stay around as floating garbage, even if they are not reachable any more. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't notice anyone else working on that topic (and/or committing something) since I've picked it up two years ago (yeah, I know, that long ago...). I saw that you would be working on "cpyext performance and completeness" during the current winter sprint this week and thought that this might also concern my thesis. So I thought I'll give you an update. I recently pushed my current (non-optimized, breaking-some-tests, but more or less working) implementation of the "CPython-style" GC-extension for cpyext. It is still in an early stage and not all cases (legacy and non-legacy-finalizers, weakrefs) are handled. However, I picked up some pace during the last couple of weeks and I'm determined to finish this implementation during the following weeks (some quirks with the tests have been haunting me, but I think I figured most of them out by now). After that, I will implement a second alternative implementation (to compare to, mostly for the sake of my thesis), which will take some more time. I also added a couple of fancy test cases (the so called "dot-tests"), so that we can test complex object graphs a little bit easier (and also because it was kind of cool to have another language inside PyPy/RPython, even if it was only for the tests...), with more test cases to come (the current ones are a bit messy). None of the new changes concerning low-latency applications are currently integrated, but that should not be too hard. I guess it won't make much sense for me to join you at this year's winter sprint, especially as I won't be able to get there before Thursday, but I might be able to join you over the IRC channel (or some other form of communication if you like). If there is anything that is worth discussing please let me know! Also feel free to comment on my code, but beware that I might change some things once I try to do some optimizations (probably not many, but at least fix the worst issues) and make it a little bit more readable. Exception with bogus line number

Hello pypy experts! I'm the author of Pythonizer, an automatic perl to python converter. In a recent conversion, I am getting a strange exception from the generated code: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/export/home/pndt/bin/compass.py", line 1744, in <module> do_hour() File "/export/home/pndt/bin/compass.py", line 1578, in do_hour makebytes() File "/export/home/pndt/bin/compass.py", line 4134, in makebytes AttributeError: 'str' object has no attribute 'get' What I'd like to get advice on is "line 4134", as compass.py only has 1759 lines, so I can't tell where the error actually is. If I change the invocation from "pypy" to "python3", the error goes away. The script runs very slowly with python3 so I'd really like to use pypy. Any suggestions? --joe

Question about print statements in rpython

Hello everyone. So I'm new to PyPy and Rpython and I'm having a hard time understanding. When I run rpython, it raises an error around the print statement in main.py and other files that use print as a keyword instead of a function. Judging by the fact that those files haven't been changed for a while, it means perhaps I'm doing it wrong, what's the way to side step this so that I can use rpython. I can't even run rpython -- help without getting that print error, Thanks

Question about pypy rpython and jitlogs

Hi, I'm not sure that's the best place to ask questions, but I couldn't find other mediums or documentation. I have a question regarding pypy jit logs: Sometimes when I run an RPython program that runs very quickly, I don't get any jit logs produced, but when I intentionally increase the execution time (by adding more loops, for example), I do get the logs. What is the mechanics behind jit logs? Is there some kind of a hot threshold that needs to be reached? Where can I read more about it? The certificate for www.pypy.org is invalid

Something changed over the last few days. I now get this message when trying to figure out what is wrong with the https://www.pypy.org: Websites prove their identity via certificates. Firefox does not trust this site because it uses a certificate that is not valid for www.pypy.org. The certificate is only valid for the following names: api.lookc.app, lookc.app The certificate is valid from Sept 2 to Dec 2 2022, which makes me think someone updated it lately. Matti

Hi, there. My name is Rangga. I knew about PyPy several years ago, but I stumbled upon some online judge problem that made me review this blog <https://www.pypy.org/>. So I install PyPy but actually, I don't find any guide on documentation about how to use it properly for the first time especially when you already have Python on your machine. So, I may have to take look once more to get it. The thing is, I'm already excited about this project and want to contribute to your documentation/blog so those people who are excited like me didn't get their excitement down just because your documentation is not clear enough and not friendly to the newcomer. I will take my time and take notes about my POV as a newcomer once I found how to contribute properly to this awesome project so PyPy will get the recognition it deserves. Thank you for all the contributors and the hard work they have done. You inspire me to be a contributor as well, especially on the open source project. I'm writing this email with a burning passion! Ubuntu PyPy PPA

failed to package _ssl module when building from source on wsl2
